Grasping at straws. Wanting to blog, but nothing to say. Well, I can think of a few things, but you know me and personal disclosure - not happening.

But one of the fun things about having a blog is looking back to see what I was doing this time a few years ago.

Drum roll, please.

"'It's over now and can't be helped, and that's one consolation,' as they always say in Turkey when they cut the wrong man's head off."*

Well, I didn't really want to turn 26, but I did it anyway. Then again, I didn't want my birthday to come and go without me turning 26, because that would just be messed up. And, I have to say, so far 26 is alright.

I had a short business meeting in Shreveport yesterday, so with all the driving and such, it was almost like having the day off. Then, I treated myself to a drive-thru daiquiri before going out for crawfish with a big bunch of friends, because, really, what fun is it to live in Louisiana if you can't have the occassional drive-thru daiquiri and a big pile of crawfish?

Good times.

Five Questions

*Cinco de Mayo party: yay or nay?

*Does having a weekend with nothing scheduled make you as happy as it makes me?

*Isn't the weather lovely today?

*Would you rather be loved or feared?

*What's the deal with Michael Jackson?

I think hickeys are just one indication that God has a sense of humor.*

*4/27/06 editorial comment: I still think that. Ten points for anyone who remembers the particular couple who inspired this comment (please submit your answers via e-mail rather than blog comment!).

Make Straight a Path in the Desert

I'm back from Arizona and I have officially declared today "Humidity Appreciation Day." To celebrate, I let my hair be curly instead of forcing it into straightness. It's quite the celebration.
I did have a great time in Phoenix. It was the perfect mix of leisure and activity - enough free time to rest and read so that I'm not completely wiped out now that I'm home, plus plently of fun things to do, including (but not limited to) fine dining, good drinks, a massage, getting to know people (which is always the best part of visiting a new city), and even a little karaoke. Someone once advised me to "leave while you're still having fun" and I've found that to be great counsel. Somehow, it makes coming home more pleasant.
Other than a slight flight delay and an accidentally-loud inappropriate crack about people being deported that I made in the airport in front of 10 hispanic guys and an immigration officer (I had on headphones and didn't realize how loudly I was talking), the travel itself went smoothly and I've sworn to turn my music off before I make any inappropriate remarks again. ; )
I'm happy to be back home now and almost ready to go back to work (but I'm not really going to think about that for a few more hours).

Observations on a Good Friday

*It is Good Friday. Good Friday, of course, has many meanings, none of which should be "I deserve to be off work today", yet I feel as though I'm being cheated by having to work on a federal holiday. That is what banking has done to me: given me a sense of entitlement and a bizarre notion that Federal Holidays are Oh So Important and equating Good Friday with Columbus Day and Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. But I guess I should have to work today. Jesus did His hardest work on Good Friday.

*Today is Jean Day at work. Jean Day cracks me up. It's very "The Office". It's one of those things you have to do, though, when you work in an office: you must participate. I'm just as happy to wear an evening gown as I am to wear jeans, so I really don't care, but if I don't participate, I'm a big jerk. Plus, when it's Jean Day here, you have to donate $5.00 to the American Heart Association, so I'm a double jerk if I don't participate. It reminds me of Crazy Hat Day (etc) from high school. Good times.

*I haven't even had time this week to detail my wonderful weekend. I'll just put it this way: last weekend, I did two things that I've been wanting to do for a very long time and both were very rewarding, in their own ways. First: I went to Dallas to visit Annie and her dear family. It had been way too long since I'd seen them. It was so good to catch up. I must go more often. You should see her girls: they are beautiful. Second: On my way back from The Big D, I took a detour through Texarkana. Texarkana, as you may or may not know, is where I grew up. As I tend to feel all nastalgic at times, I've had a great desire to go to Texarkana and just drive around and see The Sights (as few as they may be). Well, I finally did it and the only phrase I can think of to describe my experience is not even a real phrase, but it's fitting: it surrealed me out. Yeah. That's right: Surrealed.

*I'm getting ready to go to Phoenix next week. I'm trying to do all those things that have to be done before going on a trip, like thinking about what to pack, making sure I have everything so I don't have to make last minutes rushes here and there, and most importantly: trying to get everything at work squared away so I can leave all my worries behind. So far, I'm pretty stressed about it. Hopefully, by end of day Tuesday, all will be right with the world and I'll be on my merry way.

*Have a Good Friday. (There's a double meaning in that.)

Friday Morning Miscellany

Good morning, world! It's Friday and you know what that means: I'm only working half a day, then I'm driving to The Big D to see my dear friend whom I haven't seen in WAY too long. All I have to do is work a few more hours, go home and pack (can you say "procrastinate", boys and girls?) and pray that it's not pouring down rain for the whole 5 hour drive because driving in heavy rain stresses me out. (!)

I've been meeting a friend of mine at the track at 6 am for the past two weeks, which (once I drag myself out of bed) is quite rewarding. The earlier rising is threatening to turn me in to an old person, as I can barely hold my eyes open after 9 pm, but I usually force semi-alertness until 10 or so. I hope that I can get used to it and continue going to the track or gym even after my friend is not available to go with me anymore. Even though it's dark at 6 am (which I don't like), I'm loving the sunshine in the evenings. And can I just say: it's already hot and super-humid at 6 am?

April is my favorite month. Isn't it a nice one?

Spring Gym Playlist

I'm not naturally a person who enjoys sweating. I've had to force myself into it, but I do like it now (for the most part). Anything that can distract me from the fact that I'm sweating is a good thing for me. Having someone to chat with while exercising is good for two reasons: (1) personal interaction is (obvs.) better than iPod isolation and (2) talking while exercising requires a bit more work. Watching a TV show is also a nice distraction when I'm exercising because I like to multitask (not the watching TV is a "task", per se) and I don't feel bad about watching TV if I'm simultaneously doing something productive. But having good workout music is both disctracting and invigorating. I usually find myself working out harder (without really thinking about it) when I've got my workout music going. Behold: the power of music.

Because We Can - Fatboy Slim (Moulin Rouge Soundtrack)
Crush With Eyeliner - REM
Crazy Little Thing Called Love - Dwight Yoakam
Let it Out (Let it All Hang Out) - The Hombres
Holla Back Girl - Gwen Stefani
I'm Too Sexy - Right Said Fred
Canned Heat - Jamiroquai (it's the song Napoleon Dynomite dances to)
Diamond Dogs - Beck (Moulin Rouge Soundtrack)
The Rockafeller Skank - Fatboy Slim
Curbside Prophet - Jason Mraz (Jason Nevins remix)
We Will Rock You - Queen
You're the Best - Peter Cetera
These Words - Natasha Bedingfield (some crazy dance mix version)
Thriller - Michael Jackson
I'd Rather Dance With You - The Kings of Convenience
Such Great Heights - The Postal Service (not to be confused with the Iron & Wine version)
Beverly Hills - Weezer
Shot Through the Heart - Bon Jovi
Get Down Tonight - KC and the Sunshine Band
Lady - Lenny Kravitz
Eye of the Tiger - Journey
Cannonball - The Breeders
Catch My Disease - Ben Lee
Since U Been Gone - Kelly Clarkson (Jason Nevins Rock da Club Edit)
Relax - Frankie Goes to Hollywood

And there's more where that came from.

Current Obsessions

getting enough sleep to function on, Diet Mountain Dew as a sleep substitute, perfecting my Spring Gym Playlist on my iPod, drinking more water, finding more time in a day, PG Wodehouse, making lists, worrying about not worrying, trying to do better today rather than waiting until tomorrow to try and do better, reassessing my new year's resolutions (The Quarterly Report), bronze (it's the new pink, you know), checking my e-mail, Target, Jergen's daily self tanner, finding a new house to rent, trying not to think about moving, turkey sandwiches, tulips, 10 pounds, 24, MPH (walking, jogging, running, biking), making sure my alarm clock is set early enough that I can hit the snooze at least once, learning more (about pretty much everything)
