Potty Talk

Okay, this is probably entirely unladylike of me to write about this, but here goes:

One of the things I've often heard complaints about from international travellers is the bathroom situation. I've heard tales of toilet paper that was more like Saran wrap that paper; complete lack of paper; the bidet; etc. (I've noted to myself to pack some tissue during any international excursion.) I'd even heard tales of the European squat toilet, but I wrote it off as a funny story that had no import to my life.

Then, one of my fellow Thailand sojourners e-mails me this. I'm almost speechless (because, you know, if you can't say anything nice...). So I will limit my comment to this: have these people not seen the wonder that is the American toilet?!?

At least I know now instead of later.

Eww. Are you sure you want to go to Thailand? I know I couldn't handle that. Who knew the concept of a toilet was so far out there?

Have fun with that!

Now I know what to get you for a going away gift.

Wow, I'm not sure whether this constitutes bravery or . . . something else!

I'm trying to be open minded about it. I mean, how could 3 billion Asians be wrong? (Except for that whole "Buddhism" thing, natch.)

Toilet Paper squashed down and put inside of a ziplock bag. That's the way we'd pack it when we were in the military...few things more upsetting than wet tp.

That's mind-boggling! They have all the necessary elements there. Water line. Sewage hole. Why not take the next step and get a commode? Seems like easier installation too...perhaps there's a lack of licensed plumbers?

I've used a squat potty before...you just adapt to what you need to do. It was in Italy btw, not so third world as you might expect in some places.
