Okay, here's the deal with my possible trip to Thailand: I am applying to go on this trip through the Rotary Club. For those of you who have no clue what the Rotary Club is - it's not some secret brotherhood like the Masons, it's a worldwide civic organization that does humanitarian work both in each club's community as well as internationally.
So anyway, the Rotary Club has a program called Group Study Exchange, which is like being an exchange student, only it's for people with jobs. Basically, they pick a team of 5 or 6 young professionals who travel to a foreign country (Thailand in this case), where they stay with local families and learn about the local industries, economy, etc.
This particular trip is scheduled for the whole month of March (about 5 weeks). I've cleared the first major hurdle (which I thought would never happen) - I've gotten approval to be off work that long. So now, I have to turn in my application to the Rotary Club and hope I get picked to be on the team.
I need to get my application in by this Friday, but first, I have to write an essay about why I want to go and what I hope to get out of the experience. I haven't written an actual essay in about 4 years, so I find this a bit intimidating. I'm really excited about the possibility, though. I really hope it works out.
Holy King Bhumibol Adulyadej! I can't believe it! You'll ace the essay. One night in Bangkok.......
Posted by: Lisa at September 6, 2006 12:47 PMWow! That sounds exciting! I sympathise about the essay. I was nervous about writing after having just the summer off....
Posted by: merry_maiden at September 6, 2006 02:51 PMWhat a great opportunity! I'm sure you'll do fine with the essay, you've always been good with words. When do you find out if you make the team?

Posted by: emily at September 7, 2006 08:56 AMI only charge a minimal fee for application SA's. Wink, wink.
I hope all goes smoothly with your application, and I really, really hope you leave the country.
Posted by: Andrew at September 7, 2006 11:57 AMAndrew, you are SO mean! (And I already wrote my essay, S.A.)
I have a few more hoops to jump through, but I should know, one way or the other, by the end of the month.
