"I wish I could write songs," I tell a friend the other day.
"Why would want to write songs?" she asks.
"Don't you ever get that feeling where you just want to do something terribly beautiful and moving? Don't you ever hear a song and think, 'Wow. Whoever wrote that was really amazing'? I guess I just wish I could be expressive like that."
"So why don't you just write a song?"
"That was the whole point of my bringing this up. I can't write songs. I'm a card carrying member of the 'every-good-boy-does-fine' school of music reading," I remind her.
"You can do anything you set your mind to. Hasn't anyone ever told you that?"
"The last time I bought into that lie was in kindergarten when the teacher said I could be the President if I wanted. That's what's wrong with people today. They think they can do anything they want and it will all work out. Incidently, that's probably also why there are so many bad songwriters out there."
"You're so cynical."
"I'm cynical and I can't write songs. Sounds like the beginning of a good personal ad."

much applause.
